A 38-year-old Mexican born gentleman comes to you for a consultation. He speaks excellent English and explains that recently he married "a wonderful woman" from Mexico City and that she has come to live with him, bringing her 8-year-old son from a previous relationship. He says that he likes the boy very much, and senses that the boy wants a father figure and seems to be warming to him. However, he just learned that the boy is failing school. The boy's teacher has informed him that the boy does not do his assignments in class, seems to be distracted and bored, and is sometimes disruptive, fighting with other boys. The teacher advocated a prescription drug. Your client wants advice. He asks what he should do about the situation, telling you that as a boy his own father always beat him if he did not do his schoolwork. Task: (1) Develop the three questions you would most want to ask your client, and (2) your main hypotheses about what might be occurring in this situation. (This assignment is not about arriving at possible diagnoses, but rather about learning to think like a responsible and discerning clinician. Discriminate observation, inference and conjecture from the clinical position.)
