O BJECTIVES The goal is to introduce you to the basic concepts of physics. This is not only an introduction to a set of topics that are a part of physics, but also an introduction to the way physics is done and to the way physics is conceptually constructed. A central part of physics is to understand the underlying basic laws of nature. Understand here means to discover them, to formulate them in the most simple and elegant manner possible, and then to apply them to interesting and socially important systems, often with an aim toward creating new technologies. T EXTBOOK University Physics, 12 th Ed, Vol.1&2, by HD. Young ( Carnegie-Mellon University ) , and RA. Freedman ( University of California Santa Barbara ), Addison-Wesley 2007. Mastering Physics ( www.masteringphysicscom ) Sign up for the MasteringPhysics (MP) online homework system. You must go to the system www.masteringphysics.com , register as a new student, and then buy an access code. There are two pieces of information you will need to enroll in the course at MasteringPhysics: your Student ID# just as it will appear on our grade sheets, (93320xxx) and the course id: ROJASPHYSS10 Dr. Rojas MW 2:25-4:05pm Be very careful when entering your Course ID and Student ID! After entering them, you will not be able to edit either! An initial assignment ("Introduction to MasteringPhysics") has been designed to familiarize you with MasteringPhysics. R ESOURCES Online Collaboration Tool: http://www.acrobat.com This program will be used to share lecture notes, solutions, and other important files in our class. Learn to use it and share files with others. Octave www.octave.org This is an open-source program that emulates Matlab. It can assist in performing multiple kinds of computations and visualizations.
