MAE 3780 MECHATRONICS FALL 2009 OPTIONAL DIODE PROBLEMS PROBLEMS: 1) Determine which diodes are reversed biased and which are forward biased in the circuits (a), (b), and (c) shown below. Also determine the value of Vout assuming the offset diode model with V γ = 0.7V. 2) The Zener diode voltage regulator below is required to hold the load voltage to 14V. Determine the range of load resistances R L , for which this regulation is possible. The spec sheet for the Zener diode states that it is rated at 14V, 5W.

Unformatted text preview: in a power supply. The step-down transformer has already been selected and will provide 12V rms to your rectifier at a frequency of 60 Hz. a. Sketch the input source voltage Vs(t) and the output voltage V L (t) and state which diodes are on and which are off in the appropriate cycles of Vs(t). Use the offset diode model with an offset voltage of 0.6V. b. Suppose R L = 1000 Ω and a capacitor is added across R L to provide some filtering. Sketch the output voltage V L (t) if the capacitor has a value of 8 μ F. c. Repeat part (b) for a capacitor value of 100 μ F....
