Page 1 of 2 Outline for “What Makes You Who You Are” A counter-intuitive idea The idea that humans grown based on input from both their genes and their behaviors/experiences that interact TOGETHER to develop certain abilities/habits/etc. How do our genes impact our experiences ? – Genetic make up pre-disposes us, but does not cause us to respond to our environment in a certain way until triggered by the right environmental factors. How do our experiences impact our genes ? – Our genes take their cue from experiences—small changes occur as we experience different things—continuous change/interaction between genetics & experiences. What are genomes ? – The genetic material in an organism’s chromosomes What are hox genes and what do they do ? – The genes that tell our body how to build itself (a mouse has a different set of hox genes than a chicken) How do our genes operate ? – They are switched on and off continuously by promoters—they give us the ability
