Page 1 of 3 Outline for “How Will the Internet Change Society?” and “The McDonaldization of Society” How Will the Internet Change Society?: type of information gap that is typical during periods of rapid social change The gap is between development of the technology and the development of rules to control how people use the technology. ie-- Child Predator—posing as another child to gain access to children needs to be regulated. the internet and the printing press – how these inventions changed society – Literacy becomes more widespread, communication becomes easier and more common, people can access information about almost anything… how the digital revolution differs from previous technological revolutions – -It can cause a divide between social classes because of cost -It causes people to redefine ‘community’ because they can unite without ever ‘really’ meeting -There is no face-to-face interaction/prejudice/bias…. . -People have access to much more information -This revolution was not completely controlled by adults—some adults do no understand. (‘generation lap’—role reversal) virtual communities People unite electronically over common interests without ever having to ‘really’
