Language Arts Methods and Procedures Literacy Assessment Project Overview This assignment is based on the premise that assessment of students’ language and literacy development is critical for planning and designing instruction that supports meaningful learning. Such a premise requires the collection and analysis of multiple forms of evidence over time and the consideration of what students DO know and what the CAN do. Developing an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning allows teachers to make instructional decisions that better meet the needs of ALL students. ESC: Literacy encompasses alternative ways to communicate and acquire information including the use of photos, pictures, or other symbol systems. Language also should be understood broadly to include alternative ways of communicating, including pre- linguistic forms (e.g., gestures, eye gaze, etc.) and alternative forms such as picture systems, Braille and sign language. While this literacy assessment meets the needs of all the sub-domains within CSTP Standard 5 (Assessing Student Learning), it is also intended to address Standards 1, 3, 4 and 6. Additionally, it is intended to help MST and ESC candidates prepare for the RICA exam (specifically the case study) and TPA 3. This assignment should be accomplished within the context and structure of Language Arts in the classroom, wherever possible and plausible. ESC: The same holds true for SDC (elementary) and Learning Resource Centers. This also applies to secondary settings such as SDC Science classes. While it may seem that this is not relevant to such settings, you rely on language, reading and writing to relay content information. Assessing your students’ literacy skills can inform your instructional decisions. Much of the evidence can be collected during the course of everyday classroom lessons and activities. (NOTE: Some of you will be student teaching in classrooms where various assessments are already required. You may use these data as long as you help collect it AND you analyze it). Your course readings and class discussions will help you as you engage in analyzing your data. ESC: As special educators, you may have access to other assessment data. You may refer to these assessment data. However, if you did not administer these assessments yourself, you will need to conduct further assessments. Furthermore, you may have access to other assessments that are not listed on the course website. Feel free to sue them as long as you can justify why they are appropriate for the student and how they fulfill the purpose of this assignment.
