II o Wright Company was formed with a million-dollar capital Plane had proven dependable and was in demand in Europe and its commercial potential attracted attention Did not happen as quick as ppl thought it would (commercial flight) Plane o Fly 40 mph o More maneuverable o Used smaller hp engine o Could stay in the air longer Wrights back in US o Fulfill army contract o Agreed to train 2 army pilots o Outside College Park Maryland is where field was set up o At end of july the plane officially became property of army in sept 1 1909 Wilbur installed additional set of levers on plane next to student seat so he could override pilot and control plane o First flights were short – had to get used to idea that ppl were leaving earth – get used to this idea of leaving the ground o By Oct. 21 1909 the newspapers said that Lieutenatnt Humphreys flew about 27 min and for mostof the time was piloting Lietuenant Benhamin Foulois o 3 rd Lt. to join the “force” o Represented the US gov’t at a conference and Wilbur agreed to train him
