Slaves at UNC UNC was  physically constructed by enslaved ppl Old East, the wall around campus, South bldng – built by slaves Elisha Mitchell  o Largest slave  owner at UNC (about 1000  people) o Felt underpaid so rented slaves to students and university o Argued slavery was  system of property holding under God’s law Simply property ownership like any other object o All  slaves lived at Swain hall Most of  faculty in the day used to own slaves and would also rent them to students o Students where white upper class at the time bc no scholarships so they had  money to pay for slaves and rent slaves o Slaves  stored in New East building Silent Sam – never shoots his gun off o Actually called  “Silent” Sam bc he didn’t have any ammunition o Put up year before Birth of a Nation o Dates back to 1913 during white supremacy movement o Gun points north bc he was fending off invaders o First thing you see when coming into campus from Franklin St. Unsung founders monument was commissioned in 2002 was constructed o So university could  increase diversity at school bc many African Americans often  questioned when they were greeted by a confederate war soldier
