I believe the United States has stepped up to become what I would call international peace keepers. If there is something going on we are usually one of the first, and many times one of the only countries to step up and offer aid in the form of services or money. Sometimes we are called in for diplomatic and or economic solutions. In this case many times troops are sent over to take care of these needs. This is commonly referred to as police actions. We are providing aid to all these other countries with no regard to what will happen if an earthquake ripped through the United States. We would not be prepared, and could even be financially unable to take care of our own needs. Look at how quickly we were in Chile offering aid, then look at how long it took us to take care of our fellow Americans after the hurricane that devastated southern Louisana....
