CLASS NOTES: 10/20/08 Gautama (Sanskrit)/Gotama (Pali) Conveyed what Buddha personally has experienced to a few followers Gone through internal struggles and had some fellow ascetics with him Extreme asceticism nor giving into pleasure is satisfactory => middle way From 5 kshatriya followers to 60 Setting up first sangha – monastic order (only males) o Wore yellow robes o Shaved head o Performed daily meditation o Use begging bowl for food => reliance on others o Must subscribe to statehood that “I take refuge in the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha” Dhamma = pali, Dharma = Sanskrit; the Buddhist law o 10 precepts – 1 st 5 related to followers, next 5 related to sangha – true of any Buddhist, external signs of Buddhism No killing No stealing No unchastity No lying No intoxicating liquor Eat moderately, but never in the afternoon No looking at any dancing Do not use ointments/ornaments of any kind Do not use high/broad beds
