Recently, the dates keep getting pushed back as new older Maya cities are unearthed. La Blanca is said to have emerged as early 900 BC with modest dwellings and a large sculpture resembling a 4-leaf clover. It also had a 26 meter pyramid and colored pottery.

Other Important Early Maya Sites El Mirador was the largest early city with a population of 100,000 and one of the largest pyramids of the Americas (60 m.) by c. 500 BC. San Bartolo has the earliest Maya writing (300 BC) and painting (100 BC). The painting shows the Maya maize god. Another important early site is Cival whose plaza was already in use by 500 BC. It had kings with palaces and pyramids with inscriptions (dating to 300 BC), all oriented towards the rising sun at the equinox. Two huge masks were found here and lots of polished jade.
