Kai-Ting, Chen Psych 236 Research paper assignment A meta-analysis of normal and disordered personality across the life span. Summary: The debate of stability of personality begin with some scholars have concluded that personality is stable and unchanged, but some scholars have concluded that personality may change throughout the whole life. The issue of stability of personality is important because it affect the decisions made in therapy. The article also mentions three Paradigms for Personality Stability. First, the radical contextual perspective holds that personality may change over time. Second, the biological essentialist perspective asserts that personality is immutable and most likely the product of genetic influences. Third, the compromise perspective takes the middle ground. The stability of personality is measured by test-retests results. Scholars found out that the coefficients increased from .35 in childhood to .75 in later adulthood. They also found the general personality traits, such as the Big Five
