ASTM C 128 (AASHTO No. T 84) Standard Test Method for Specific Gravity and Absorption of Fine Aggregate Equipment Balance Pycnometer Mold Tamper Pan Hairdryer Sampling Approximately 1 kg of fine aggregate from the sample is used. Weight out 1200 grams for simplicity. Aggregates passing the No. 4 sieve are used in this test. Procedures 1. Dry sample at a temperature range of 105-115 º C until there is no mass change in the aggregate. 2. Let the aggregate cool until it is comfortable to handle. 3. Cover the aggregate with water. This can be done by immersion or by adding 6% moisture to the fine aggregate. Let this stand for 24 hours. 4. Remove water excess water from the sample by drying it with a hairdryer. Stir material as drying occurs to prevent overdrying. 5. Conduct the cone test for surface moisture to determine if the aggregate is in SSD condition.
