Jamel Jenkins CIS 121 09/30/08 Ch.2 Review Questions 1. What are the basic components of a computer? o The basic components include the central processing unit(CPU), memory, and input/output(I/O) devices. 2. What is a bus? o It is a collection of parallel wires for transmitting address, data and control signals. 3. What are the basic components of the CPU? o Registers – a small, high-speed memory used to store temporary results and control information. Most computers have many registers some of which have specific functions. The Program Counter (PC) is a register that has the specific function of holding the address of the next instruction. The Instruction Register (IR) contains a copy of the current instruction. o Control Unit – The control unit is responsible for fetching instructions from main memory and decoding it (determining their type). o ALU – The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) performs operations such as addition, subtraction, and Boolean operations such as AND. 4. Explain how hardware and software are logically equivalent. o Having virtual machines allows the actual hardware to be simpler because the virtual machine can have more complex instructions that are interpreted to a smaller set of instructions that are implemented by the hardware. This allows the designers to have more complex machines by implementing the complex instructions in software rather than hardware. 5. What is CISC? o Complex Instruction Set Computer 6. What is RISC? o Reduced Instruction Set Computer 7. Name the design principles associated with RISC. o
