Experimental: The first step in this lab was to obtain a 10mL round bottom flask from our equipment drawer. The Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction will be carried out in this glassware. A 306.00 mg dry, crushed sample of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene was weighed out on an electronic scale. Then, a funnel was created by rolling up a small piece of wax paper. This funnel was used to transfer the dry 1,4-dimethoxybenzene into the 10mL round bottom flask. Next, a 1.5mL liquid sample of glacial acetic acid along with a 0.5mL liquid sample of t-butyl alcohol were added to the flask containing the 1,4- dimethoxybenzene. The flask was then chilled in a cool water bath while a 1.0mL sample of concentrated sulfuric acid was obtained. The sulfuric acid was obtained from the reagent container using a glass pipet to transfer the liquid into a small graduated cylinder.
