Differences in Formatting 1 Differences in Formatting Between a Memo and Academic Paper One of the main differences between the formatting in a memo and an academic paper relates to the header of an academic paper. In a memo it is not necessary to set up a header with a title and page number. The second difference I noticed is that with a memo you do not need to include a title page. An academic paper has each of its paragraphs indented five spaces at the beginning; whereas a memo is written in block format, meaning everything is lined up at the left margin and the right margin is left ragged. Based on the writing wizard relating to writing memos you should always keep in mind that any memo you might send could become a part of your companies legal documents; you should always be careful in what you say.
