Chem. 101 Experiment Date: Experiment #1 – Measurement of Density We first measured the weight of our graduated cylinder without liquid. Once we had the weight we than added the first liquid which was unknown liquid A. We poured 30mls of this liquid into our graduated cylinder and found the weight. After we recorded unknown liquid A, we moved on to unknown liquid B and measured the same amount 30mls and again recorded the weight of unknown liquid B. After unknown liquid B we than measured out 30mls of unknown liquid C. We recorded the weights of all unknown liquids. We found there was a significant weight change between all 3 liquids. Unknown liquid A density was .77g/ml. Unknown liquid B density was 1.1g/ml. Unknown liquid C density was .8g/ml.

New Terms: Hydrometer: is an instrument used to measure the specific gravity or relative density of liquids; that is, the ratio of the density of the liquids to the density of water. A hydrometer is usually made of glass and consists of a cylindrical stem and a bulb weighted with mercury or lead shot to make it float upright. The liquid to be tested is poured into a tall jar, and the hydrometer is gently lowered into the liquid until it floats freely.
