Using state δγ m βο l δ A chemical equation is a shorthand way of expressing a chemical change in terms of symbols and formulas. Included in this "shorthand" are many terms and symbols that tells us more about the substances reacting in the chemical reaction. The three physical states of matter are indicated as the subscripts s , l , and g . These subscripts are written following the formula of the substance. For example: hydrogen gas is represented by H 2 (g); liquid water by H 2 0(l); or solid sodium chloride by NaCl(s). Precipitates are indicated by drawing an arrow pointing downward ( ) or by simply underlining the formula of the precipitate. For example, silver chloride precipitates out in the reaction between sodium chloride and silver nitrate, this would be indicated by AgCl( ),or AgCl. Arrows are also used to indicate gases ( ). For example hydrogen gas could be written as H 2 (g) (as shown above) or H 2 ( ). Very often a solid must be dissolved in water before the reaction can occur.
