THE UMAYYAD DYNASTY: 650-750 The Dome of the Rock On a sacred hill, Hill has sacred meaning to Judaic religious history also but temple was destroyed and Muslim dome created. . According to islam, Dome of the Rock is where Adam was created, and also where the prophet ascended. Dome is centrally planned, monumental site to mark the sacred place, and a monument to the triumph of Islam, it is in that tradition of centrally planed system. It is built on a drum structure and a double shell, Octagonal building which shrinks down to a circular structure, and then a drum. Style, there is no figural representation. Only TWO images in the Koran, the Koran is not narrative, so you don’t have that same kind of impetus like in Christianity to show the life of Christ. One: “oh you who believe…. Or crimes originating in Satan”. Idea of pushing against tradition of idols. Two: “Abraham chide his father in the sake of Idols”, two images in Koran against Idols. Opposing view is that God is the creator of everything, but the artist is in competition with that. The status of images is up in the air, not settled, just like in Christianity text. There is vagueness in a kind of Koran verses, style of religious text we can see similar style to artistry. Between arches are representations of crowns, and also vegetative ornament that brings a paradecile quality. Crown representative of kings, princes, etc. that islam conquered, Images are kind of trophies because there are images representing places that they have conquered. Some artistry becomes replaced.
