History of Art 240 Lecture 12 July 30, 2010 ROMANESQUE ART II: PILGRIMAGE AND RELICS Pilgrimage: Biggest trip you can do in the middle ages. Santiago di Compostela, St. James. Idea of word of God spreading all over the world. St. James went to northern Spain. Pilgrimage to Santiago. St. James is the destination, prayer to St. James, etc. Along the way there are churches and sites that you can see. Places along the road. Cathedral of Saint James (Santiago) di Compostela Church of Santiago, (modern building is NOT medieval. Shrine existed from the 9 th century, 11 th century they built it again. Similar to design at Cluney. But purpose was different because Santiago was more for pilgrimage, but Cluney was more for Monastary. At this Cathedral the design is different because it is more for pilgrimages, procession is different. Plans reflect it but it is subdle. Plan, Crusiform shapped (shapped as cross). Has tunnel vaults (Barrel vault). Has Transverse arches because they cross the barrel. Archade with basse, you can tell how many stories because of the stone indication of levels. One isle on each side. Apse. There are transverse arches of the isle along with transverse arches of the nave. Second floor arches are like the buttresses in Cluney. Gallery (second floor arches) act like buttress as support. Arches going from the nave into the isle, so Groin vaults are shown at each square on the side isles. Because two barrel vaults crossing each other.
