FUNDAMENTAL INTRODUCTORY COURSE 4 CNT 3004 COMPUTER NETWORKS CONCEPTS ADMINISTRIVIA OBJECTIVES: • This course provides an introduction to the topic of computer networks. The goal of the course is to provide students with a foundation allowing them to identify, analyze, and perhaps solve basics computer network-related problems. • The course examines the network architecture as conceptual framework for specifying a computer network, and the network protocols as the set of rules and procedures that mediate the exchange of information between two communicating processes.

3 5 CNT 3004 COMPUTER NETWORKS CONCEPTS ADMINISTRIVIA GOALS: • Understand the underlying principles of networking. • Understand layers within OSI and the Internet model and be able to place network components (protocols, hardware, programs, etc.) within the appropriate layer. •Describe the properties of communication channels, their impairments and how the communication protocols deal with them (errors, delay, noise, etc.) • Explain link-layer protocol functionalities such as framing, flow control, error control and media access control. 6 CNT 3004 COMPUTER NETWORKS CONCEPTS ADMINISTRIVIA GOALS: • Describe the main tasks of the network layer and explain packet switching, network protocols, routing and network interconnection. • Describe basic functionality of transport protocols. Show each one of the functions and their treatment in Ti i C t l P t l ( T C P ) Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
