ELEMENTARY CHINESE I V33.0201.73131 Syllabus for Fall Semester of 2010 Instructor: Zhao Wang Office: 41 East 11th Street, Room 726 E-mail: zw306@nyu.edu Office Hours: By appointment Course Description This course is designed to teach basic skills in reading, writing and speaking of modern Mandarin Chinese with an emphasis on a solid training at the beginning level. Upon completing of the course, stu- dents are expected to have a good command of basic grammatical constructions, a working vocabulary of over 600 words and active use of about 400 characters. Cours Goals - Master Pinyin system and lay a more solid foundation in pronunciation and tones; - Build up vocabulary necessary for higher level Chinese studying - Familiarize student with basic Chinese grammar and sentence structures - Recognize both traditional and simplified Chinese characters - Have better understanding of Chinese culture, lifestyles, and social-cultural conventions.
