De Facto Forms of Governance: Patriarchal and Patrimonial In the past, power was all de facto based on patriarchal and patrimonial power relations (Weber) Patriarchal relations : The father figure in a family or clan governed the members of the family or clan. • Father Village chief • Usually based on charisma and tradition Patrimonial relations : The father figure governed over a large segment of society beyond the clan. • Monarchs (Kings, Queens, Emperors, Sultans, etc.)
