Robert Wu Chemistry Honors Period 1 Copper/Silver Lab 4/19/09 Procedure: In the Copper/Silver Lab, the silver in silver nitrate is replaced with copper in a single replacement reaction when solid copper is placed in an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. Start the experiment by taking an initial mass of our copper coil. Then pour 100 ml of silver nitrate solution from a larger container in a 100 ml beaker with a copper coil suspended in the solution with a stirring rod. Next, allow the solution to sit for the next 24 hours. In the first couple minutes of the experiment, observe silver forming around the copper coil since copper is more active than silver. As silver forms around the copper coil, the copper coil gradually loses mass and copper ions replace silver ones in the silver nitrate aqueous solution. After 24 hours, agitate the copper coil against the beaker in order to shake off the remaining silver that is sticking to the copper coil. With the copper coil out of the solution, strain the
