Robert Wu 11/16/07 Mr. Riotto US I GL – AP 1 – Why were many Patriot soldiers who had volunteered to defend their liberties so untrustworthy and even cowardly? Patriots soldiers who had volunteered in the Continental Army are so untrustworthy because they’re no different then mercenaries. Washington describes them as on the edge of mutiny when a cut in their allowances occur and notes that the Connecticut troops will not stay longer than their term. He predicts that militiamen will soon be called out to fight on account of a lack of soldiers. The soldiers can even be considered as cowardly when taking into consideration the disorder and chaos among the patriot soldiers defending New York from the British after evacuating Boston. Washington describes the patriot soldiers as flying from their own shadows. 2- Paine’s Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence have both been referred to as the most potent propaganda documents in American history. Comment.
