Robert Wu 2/21/09 Period 5 US I AP – GL In the 1800 election, Federalists lost because of the Alien and Sedition Acts as well as John Adams not declaring war after raising taxes and creating a navy for it. Jefferson beat Adams 73 to 65 electoral votes because he received New York and beat Burr in the House of Representatives. The 1800 election was a revolution because of a peaceful transfer of power and the Republicans were the “people’s party.” Inaugurated on March 4, 1801, Jefferson believed in unity, neutrality, but not entangling alliances. Jefferson revoked the Sedition Act and Alien Acts as well as the excise tax but did not alter the Hamiltonian system other than that. Marbury v. Madison result in the Federalist John Marshall dismissing the case because the Judiciary Act of 1789 was unconstitutional but strengthened the Supreme Court’s authority in determining constitutionality of laws. Jefferson created a weak police force and navy because he distrusted them but suffered in the Tripoli War until a treaty of peace that extorted $60,000 from America.
