Social Entrepreneurship in Engineering APSC 150 Case 1, Tutorial 3 In the past two lectures we have explored the role of engineers in society, the meaning of appropriate technology, and the idea that technology is only a part of the solution to complex problems. Engineers today must think creatively about how to approach and solve problems that matter in Canada and abroad. In today’s tutorial you will have the opportunity to apply the broad range of skills that we have learned so far. I encourage you to be creative in your designs and solutions! A great engineering success is the rapid expansion of wireless telecommunications around the world, both in developed countries, but especially in the developing world. We have also seen that sometimes a great technological success need not be totally revolutionary, but rather that making existing technology more appropriate or finding creative applications for existing technology can have massive societal impact. The goal of today’s tutorial is to design a creative technical solution that builds on the existing telecommunications infrastructure around the world, and addresses a serious social need. But let’s push the boundaries of engineering and be a bit entrepreneurial. We know technology does not exist in a vacuum, and alone it will not solve pressing problems. As part of this project, you will have to also design a business and marketing strategy to get your product into the hands of those who need it and make a profit too. You can choose to focus your work either here in Canada or in India. For your reference, we have
