Chapter 2: Perceptions of Environment for Tourism and Ethical Issues Environment o Surroundings o Objective Systems – nature o Perceived Surroundings – belonging and home Christianity – good and bad of environments (bad – dominion, good- stewardship) Indigenous belief – interconnectedness between human and non-human Chinese Daoist – sky, earth, man relations Grand Tour – European low countries to romantic wild areas (contrast of civilization), before  Romantics, natural landscapes feared and loathed Romantic movement – wilder landscape to feel emotion, joy, freedom, beauty o Mountains and coastlines tourism Beach tourism = health to pleasure for middle to upper class purposes Holiday – middle and working class when the railroad came into place Mountain – for winter sports especially skiing and ice skating o First elites, but later mass participation with help of government aid economic
