Chapter 4 Notes 16:25 Understanding Interpersonal Communication Verbal symbols are important in interpersonal communication for many  reasons. o Language cements social relationships. Words connect people to one another and interpersonal relationships  are constructed in everyday conversation. Some research indicates that people who swear around each other  may do so to reinforce their relationship is special and not bound by  normal conversations. o Language developed as a means to differentiate members of an in-group  from those of an out-group. o Verbal messages can have dramatic (even unintended) effects. o Although we have separated our presentation of verbal and nonverbal  message systems into two chapters, it’s important to remember that they  are inextricably intertwined, and it’s really the interplay between them that  makes meaning. Understanding Verbal Symbols     Language - a system comprised of vocabulary and rules of grammar that  allows us to engage in verbal communication. o Allows humans to communicate  o We start to think about it as if its something normal and fixed o Most humans cant remember anything from their lives before they  acquired language o Principals of language: Language is arbitrary and symbolic Its human made There are different languages all around the world Language is a way of coding our reality so we can refer to it Words merely represent things. They are not the things they describe

Chapter 4 Notes 16:25 Language is a code composed of symbols Imperfect Verbal symbols - words, or the vocabulary that make up a language. Grammar - refers to a set of rules dictating how words can be combined to  make a meaningful message. Verbal symbols are important to a language system, but they must be  accompanied by grammatical rules telling us how to use them. o The process of  encoding , or putting our thoughts into meaningful  language, and  decoding , or developing a thought based on hearing  language, require an adequate vocabulary and a grasp of the rules of  grammar. Verbal symbols form the building blocks of interpersonal communication. Semantic Triangle  Attributes of Verbal Symbols     5 attributes help us understand how verbal symbols are used in interpersonal  communication.
