Unformatted text preview: Maegan Beinoras October 1, 2010 CH411Conry Class Assignment #4 The term valence is best defined as the “number of electrons that an atom uses in bonding”(791). To determine the valence of an atom, an appropriate resonance structure of a molecule containing that atom must first be drawn. Valence can then be calculated as follows: Valence = (number electrons in valence shell of free atom) – (number nonbonding electrons on atom in molecule) Atoms can have multiple valences. N has a group valence of 5. In the compound NO 5 , each of its valence electrons are bonded to an O so N’s valence is 5. In the compound NI 3 , only 3 of N’s 5 valence electrons are bonded to an I, so N’s valence is 3. Valence is a useful tool for determining the properties of a molecule. If the valence of an atom is less than its group valence, than there must be nonbonding electrons on the atom. In some cases, these lone pairs can form additional bonds. For example, oxygen in diethyl ether has lone electron pairs and is a hydrogen bond acceptor.
