Anth 2 120106 Colonialism Commonly defined as empire building, trade, and “Age of Discovery” o Later, “white man's burden” and “manifest destiny” Initiated in 15 th C by small group of people from part of EurAsian landmass trying to find cheaper way to import goods- mercantilism. By 15thC enough power and prosperity to look beyond its shores again. o Primary impetus to colonial expansion? Spices were the main things. o Who were primarily instigators of initial European expansion which leads to colonization? o Africa Primary interest in trade in enslaved Africans Centered on gold and slave coasts Involved both Europeans and Africans Produces “underdevelopement” Fueled British Industrial Revolution 1500s to 1800s: 10-12 million people left Africa due to slaves, some others estimate 20-40 million taken from Africa Arrivals (by regions) 3 mil to Brazil 4 mil to the Carribean 1 mil to Spanish-America .5 mil to North America o Asia
