CHEMISTRY 3B Professor Peter Vollhardt 8/28/08 Lecture 1 ASUC Lecture Notes Online is the only authorized note-taking service at UC Berkeley. Do not share, copy or illegally distribute (electronically or otherwise) these notes. Our student-run program depends on your individual subscription for its continued existence. These notes are copyrighted by the University of California and are for your personal use only. D O N O T C O P Y Sharing or copying these notes is illegal and could end note taking for this course. ANNOUNCEMENTS The syllabus here is also posted online at bSpace . Due to shortages in space, some of you may have to take the 3BL lab during Summer 2009. My office is in 635 Latimer Hall . Since this lecture is webcast, you can go back and look at it if you miss anything. You can also view lectures from previous years since those were webcast as well. I have already posted my slides on NMR onto bSpace. I will also post the most recent PowerPoint lectures for you to use. We have several people helping with the course, including Dr. Neil Viernes as well as Dr. Chunmei Li. Our head TA is Andy Tsai and our administrative coordinator is Lucia Briggs. The webcast is designed to allow you to review material and to revisit things that you may have missed. It is not a replacement for attending class. Other resources include going to any of the lab TAs’ office hours and getting tutored at the SLC . In addition to the textbook, I recommend getting access to ChemPortal , which has an electronic version of the text, practice problems, and resources to help you on your studies. Molecular models are also extremely useful in terms of visualizing what is going on. I do not assign problems from the book because they give students a false sense of security. Instead, I recommend working out as many problems as possible. If you are interested in obtaining a letter of recommendation, make sure you talk with your TA before the end of the semester. They will be writing your recommendations and I can co-sign them if you request it. LECTURE Before I start, I would like you to know that I am very approachable and that I encourage you to attend my office hours. CHAPTER 14: DELOCALIZED PI SYSTEMS
