Lab 3: Friedel-Crafts (9/25/08) INTRODUCTION In this lab, we performed a Friedel-Crafts reaction between biphenyl and 2-cholo-2- methylpropane, using aluminum chloride as a Lewis Acid. We were given the NMR spectra of the expected major product, but were required to analyze the NMR spectra, the TLC plates, and the melting point of the product to determine the structure of our major product. DISCUSSION By observing the NMR spectra and eliminating other possible isomers of the product of this reaction, I concluded that was the major product. On the H-NMR spectra, there appear to be only three distinct hydrogens. Also, there is a doublet of doublets in the aromatic region, which indicates that there are 4 Hs bonded directly to each phenyl ring. Finally, there is a peak with a large area under it that resides in the far shielded side of the H-NMR spectrum, which coincides with the 18 Hs in the two trimethyl groups on opposite sides of the molecule. This peak is a singlet, which coincides with the fact that these Hs are not coupled.
