Tyler Carlson MUH 2019-03 September 27, 2009 Media Journal #5 Just like most other creations of musical genres, the genre becomes characterized by the select few first hits produced by the beginning musicians. One of the first famous Motown artists was Berry Gordy, Jr. whom is credited with defining the Motown sound. He created Motown records during the spring of 1960 in Detroit Michigan. Mr. Gordy incorporated multiple strategies to increase record sales, and was known especially for having control over the artists on label. For example, processing the talent by incorporating his person styles and what he feels sounds right. Along with the ownership of publishing, he also modeled his stars charisma, actions, and wardrobe. Another important technique of Berry Gordy, Jr. was the broadening of the intended audience further past strictly African American audience, but instead seeking to empower black musicians into the pop scene across all racial boundaries.
