Revised Syllabus Dr. David Wanser Bio n337: Health Information Technology and Privacy Protection Unique Number: 49593 Credit Hours: 3 Fall 2010 Overview: This course will provide an overview of medical terminology, the existing healthcare infrastructure, public health, current issues in health information technology (HIT) development and use, federal policy pertaining to HIT and the development of data standards. There will be an emphasis on operational and regulatory aspects of privacy and security. Current and future requirements for meaningful use of health technologies, current research in the adoption and use of electronic health records, healthcare financing and other topics will be presented and are designed to provide students with an awareness of the forces that impact healthcare practice, providers and patients. The purpose of the class is to integrate the many associated issues of health care policy, technology, legal and regulatory aspects of health information technology.
