[2] It is known that English sometimes allow intransitive prepositions, such as (3) John passed out . There can be (at least) two possible analyses for the string “passed out”: (4) a. pass out is a verb phrase made out of a verb pass and the prepositional phrase headed by out as an adjunct in the VP. b. pass out is a complex verb (V-P compound) that heads the VP in (3).
