Dang 1 Nhu Dang Carol Hensley English 1302-8425 23 July 2009 Does Music Really Affect Us? In the article “Rock & Roll: Does It Influence Teen’s Behavior?”, Kathleen O’Tool points out , “On average, American youth listen to music and watch music videos four or five hours a day, which is more time than they spend with their friends outside of school or watching television” (2). Truly, music has become very important in our society. It always appears in many sacred events such as weddings, baptisms, and graduations. Some people think that music is just for entertainment; however, others believe music is so powerful that it can influence how people think and behave in different ways. While opponents say music is just a language presented with sounds and rhythms, some studies prove that music has a power to heal illness. It has been used as a type of medicine to cure sickness in a plenty of places such as hospitals, schools, and nursing homes. It can create a romantic atmosphere; therefore, it is used to calm and rest the listeners’ minds. “In a hospital intensive-care unit, patients on ventilators who listen to music of their choice actually relax, while those who don’t hear music grow more tense,” says Sari N. Harrar in “Music as Medicine” (1). I also found that many college students use music as a helpful way to relieve stress and anxiety before tests.
