Best Practice Indicator Assignment This assignment is designed to assist teacher candidates with the development of their professional knowledge regarding best practices for individuals with severe disabilities. This is not about the student being assessed this semester, Rather, it is about quality indicators that should be present in every program that supports individuals with significant support needs. As the coursework unfolds teacher candidates are given time to integrate new knowledge into their checklist. Texts, outside articles, and website should also contribute to the items created on the checklist. A well developed best practice checklist is essential to a strong recommendations section in the assessment portfolio. Thoroughness early in the semester will be extremely helpful at the end of the semester. Final Submission: best practices due with reflective essay and recommendations (4-5 pages with extensive referencing in chart and paper) Directions: 1. Candidates should enter what are believed to be the top 8-15 best practices in a particular category. These should be very brief and linked to a specific source with a page number. 2. Take this checklist to your placement and mark each item, making comments if needed. 3. Use this checklist to write an essay that a)addresses program strengths; b) addresses areas where the program is not of quality, and c) state what you believe are the most important changes that need to occur in your program in order to make it move toward best practice. 4. APA citations apply and a formal reference list should be attached. You may do this with a group or alone. Just make sure you indicate which part of the checklist was your creation. If this is constructed in a group, grades are kept separately. 1
