Mike Rumler English 102 Opinionated Response February 12 th 2008 Emerson’s Self Reliance “Man is timid and apologetic; he is no longer upright; he dares not say ‘I think,’ ‘I am,’ but quotes some saint or sage. He is ashamed before the blade of grass or the blowing rose.” I choose to reflect on this quote because in my eyes, it sums up exactly what self reliance is. Self reliance is someone relying on their own capabilities, judgment, or resources, which basically mean you, are independent. But is self reliance a good thing? If all you rely on is your thought and your feelings you will not be able to know what is right and what is wrong. The only things you think are truly right are whatever is written down in which some ‘philosopher’ said

Everyone in this world today will answer that question differently which makes everything the ‘right one.’ This is one reason why the world is expanding so rapidly and many new cultures are being created. This is because there are people out there that what to be real individuals and see what the world has to offer. This individualism makes the world so unique and interesting that wherever you go you learn something new, all you have to do is get over your self reliance....
