Another “ruling idea” that Marx did not describe but that Marxist theorists after him have described To keep the economy going, people have to keep spending money, even when they are not paid as much as they produce: John Maynard Keynes-- “Keynesian economics”--an economic theory that most western governments used in the mid- 1900’s: “borrowing” money from the future, and/or taxing people who have extra money (the rich) so that that “spiral” into a Depression won’t happen This required another “ruling idea:” CONSUMERISM through easy credit to individuals and through government taxing and spending on programs that give people jobs (in schools, parks, libraries, health clinics, garbage pick-up, highway building, water purification, etc.)

How would Marx grasp these? • Religion? Is it really just an opiate? Why, then, have religious organizations resisted exploitative governments and corporations? • Imperialism? The rest of the world hasn’t followed in “our” footsteps. When capitalism arises in Africa, Asia and Latin America (aka “The South”), the process is very different--this will be the topic Du Bois will treat. Using a theory to explain things it didn’t explain • Could we use Marx’s logic to explain empirical events that happened after he died--things like workers not getting poorer, religion not just being an opiate, and capitalism not working in the Global South the way it worked in US and Europe?...
