           Social Inequality II Sociology 1 Session 5   Hi and welcome to session 5! Your assigned readings for this session are: Text Chapter 9 Global Stratification. Reader Chapter 35 "The Power Elite" Reader Chapter 26 "Nickel-and-Dimed" Part I: SOCIAL INEQUALITY IN THE U.S. We tend to downplay the extent of inequality in the US. There are several reasons  for this. First, at least in intent, we are all supposed to be equal in the eyes of the  law. Second, American culture tends to hold individualism and individual social  mobility in high regard. Third, we also tend to socialize in groups of similar people  and we don't tend to mix with unlike persons often. And last, the US is a fairly  affluent society and so we often don't see the extent of inequality here. However, there is a lot of disparity between rich and poor in the US. But how do we
