April 14, 2009 Evolution in Reverse: Survival of the weak o Hunting kills the big and leave the small (Question) The source of all new alleles is: o Gene flow o Natural selection o Mutation o Genetic drift o Migration (Question) The reason why mutation alone cannot effect much evolutionary change: o Too rare (Question) What is the ‘raw material’ for evolution? o Variation Genetic Variation Small population you have the opportunity for genetic drift Genetic drift reduces variation All adaptations are not structural Pheasants running instead of flying when hunted You fly you die Darwin hated peacocks: Large gaudy tail o Makes him slow and obvious o Wasting resources on useless tail By reducing his survival rate because the big tail he is increasing the amount of females he is attracting o Makes them make more babies Sexual Selection o Special case of natural selection o Sex is central to evolution o Conflict between sexes “evolutionary arms race between the sexes” Differential Investment in Reproduction o Females generally make greater investment o Millions of sperm= spread freely o Eggs are rare= spread more jewishly
