Productive and Counterproductive Behavior 2 Productive and Counterproductive Behavior Behavior can be defined as the manner in which one conducts itself (Dictionary.com, 2010). With this being the definition behavior can be good, bad, productive, and counterproductive. This paper will focus solely on the aspects of productive and counterproductive behavior within an organizational setting. The writer will focus on the positive and negative effects of both types of behavior while also recommending strategies to increase productive, and decrease counterproductive behaviors. The writer will also describe throughout the paper the impact that both types of behavior can have on an organization. Productive Behavior Productive behavior can be defined as behavior that contributes positively to an organizations goals, or objectives (Jex & Britt, 2008). This behavior only comes into effect over time. A new employee cannot produce productive behavior because he or she is still within the transition process. Basically the company is taking a chance on a new employee that the individual will be able to produce a profitable outcome for the organization. An example of a transition period would be a newly hired corrections officer within the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (Doc). The officer is locked into transition for the period of one year. Within this period the officer will complete a basic training for six weeks, and then upon completion will start training plan consisting of four phases (Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, 2010). This training period will ensure that the officer has been trained properly before being left on their own. Until this training period is over the organization has put more money into the new hire than that hire can produce, so no productive behavior can be counted.

Productive and Counterproductive Behavior 3 Productive behavior in most cases is viewed as when a company starts to obtain a return on the investment they have put into a new employee. Although this definition includes the financial profit that the new employee may gain for the company there is more to the definition than just that. The three factors that go into productive behavior are job performance, organizational citizenship behavior, and innovation. Job Performance Job performance is the first factor in aiding productive behavior. Job performance is defined as the behaviors engaged in while at work that contributes to organizational goals (Jex & Britt, 2008). The three main factors that go into job performance are effectiveness, productivity, and utility. Productivity is how a person can achieve a goal at the minimal cost to the organization. Two people can produce the same results but one may do it at a lower cost thus making the other person less productive. Effectiveness is relating to everyone in a well rounded
