2 Diversity Diversity within the Motion Picture Gran Torino Diversity within the media is what society has made it. Society has dictated that diversity within the media must present a form of racial tension for it to be correct. Within this paper the writer will examine the movie Gran Torino, and how it follows the media and society’s ground rules for racial tension. This motion picture is a perfect example of how people of different ethnicities may view one another. The movie is based in a small town with three main characters that take the lead roles. One character, Walt is an old military veteran that has a racial wall as thick as they come. Tao, the other main character is a teenage boy of Asian descent who came to America with his family for a better life. Sue is the last of the main characters. Her role is the one that bonds Walt and Tao to a lifelong friendship. The Crime The neighborhood which used to be predominantly white is now in Walt’s eyes being taken over by the so called zipper heads (Asians). Walt’s neighborhood in his opinion is going down the drains fast. Tao a quiet boy, with only innocence on his mind is walking home and starts to get harassed by Hispanics that are depicted as being thugs, and gang members. Tao does not play into the boisterous remarks made by these individuals and keep walking. Before long Tao’s cousins, who are also depicted as being thugs come to his rescue. They verbally battle with the Hispanics and send them on their way. The cousin now wants repaid and invites Tao to join their so called gang. There is only one catch, it is to steal Walt’s classic car, the Gran Torino. Later that night Tao holds true to his word and attempts to steal this prized possession from Walt. As Walt lies in his bed he hears the breaking glass that alerts him to Taos devious
