Ethics in the DOC 2 Ethics in the DOC Companies that rule the financial world today must have general guidelines that they follow. These guidelines are called ethics. Ethics ensures that everyone including the employees and the customers are treated fairly. These so called ethics are also incorporated into facilities that most people would like to forget about. These facilities are the prisons that house some of the most merciless individuals in the state of Pennsylvania. Although most of the individuals that are confined within the prison walls have no personal ethics it is the job of the staff members to ensure that each and every employee follows the code of ethics that is enforced by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PaDoc). Mission Statement Every company must have a mission statement, including the PaDoc this is where in most cases ethics starts. A mission statement is a definition of what the company stands for, and what the company is expected to produce. Although the PaDoc does not produce material things, the mission statement must still conform to the overall community’s needs, and expectations. The PaDoc’s mission statement is as follows "Our mission is to protect the public by confining persons committed to our custody in safe, secure facilities and to provide opportunities for inmates to acquire the skills and values necessary to become productive law-abiding citizens; while respecting the rights of crime victims" (Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, 2010). The mission statement provided from the PaDoc states clearly to the community what the ultimate goal is. The mission statement is well written because it includes a part for all members that the Doc effects. It includes a part for the inmates by stating that the Doc will provide safe and secure facilities, and it includes parts for the community by stating that the Doc will provide
