Unformatted text preview: After reading about the research on the authoritarian personality, r ight-wing authoritarianism, and Jost's and Block's research on the personality traits of conservatives, do you agree with some critics that politically liberal psychologists are unfairly painting a negative portrait of political conservatives? How does your own political position affect your opinion on this issue? Can we keep political opinions from biasing research on personality and political attitudes? After reading the sections on authoritarian personality, right-wing authoritarianism, and Jost's and Block's research on the personality traits of conservatives, I do believe there is some evidence of political bias present to a certain degree. In the case of the authoritarian personality, I think there is little evidence of bias. The text makes a point of noting that there appears to be little correlation between authoritarianism and political party affiliation. (Funder, 2010) Rather it points out that authoritarians seek the candidate that appears to be more powerful. While there is generally nothing positive stated about the authoritarian personality, it doesnt seem that anyone at this point was pointing the finger at conservatives. I do believe that bias may have played a factor in Jack and Jeanne Blocks assessment however. First, as noted in the text, their subjects were not representative of the entire US population, but rather only representative of a small region in the San Francisco Bay that favored liberalism. A study done elsewhere may have demonstrated entirely different results. Furthermore, there seems to be an emphasis on the negative traits associated with conservatives and an emphasis on the positive traits associated with liberals. I consider myself politically independent but if I had to choose a side, I would undoubtedly side with the liberal party. I actually laughed out loud when I saw conservatives portrayed as mentally unhealthy. I have always viewed conservatives as closed-minded and averse to rational thought, based in part on their associated views in opposition of topics such as gay marriage and welfare. marriage and welfare....
