A mass production technology would be placed in the routine technologies quadrant of Perrow’s framework. There is little task variety and procedures are objective and computational. Tasks are formalized and standardized. There is low task variability and high task analyzability. Small batch technologies would be placed in the non-routine technologies quadrant of Perrow’s framework. There is high task variety and the conversion process is not analyzable or well understood. A great deal of effort is devoted to analyzing problems and activities. Tasks are complex because not only is the number of unexpected situations large, but experience and technical knowledge are used to solve problems and perform the work. Small batch production relies heavily on the human operator and is thus not highly mechanized. There is high task variability and low task analyzability.
