Magtrieve Oxidation of 4-Chlorobenzyl Alcohol Performed on 6/24/10 Results: My first crop of aldehyde weighed .040g while my second weighed .020g, giving me a total of .060g. This collection gave me a 42.6% yield of the expected product. I found the Rf values to be .33mm for the 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol and .58mm for my product. The melting point was found to be 37.8-43.6 for the first crop and 44.1-46.3°C for the second crop of product which is close to the actual 46°C melting point of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde. Discussion: In this reaction the desired product was filtered out using sublimation, a technique that is possible here because the 4-chlorobenzaldehyde has a higher vapor pressure than the 4- chlorobenzyl alcohol. This higher vapor pressure means that our product was more volatile. During the reaction the warm sand bath (110°C) heated the product and unreacted starting materials causing some of the solid to enter the gas phase.
