Date of Reading: Sept 10, 2009 Title: Tartuffe Name of Author: Moliere a.k.a. Jean Baptiste Poquelin Date of Writing: September 17, 2009 Country of Origin: Europe: France Synopsis: Main Idea: Tartuffe is a play that satirizes false piety and aspects of the Catholic Church. The brunt of the satire is gullible Christianity. Main Characters/Characteristics: 1. Orgon is the protagonist and may as well be the most naive character in the play. Such blindness is not only erratic, but scary. His perception of the real world is so distorted that people who should mean the world to him are nothing more than trash that pollutes the streets. Having once adopted a life of piety, Orgon tries to become the epitome of the pious person and goes to absurd extremes both in his words and deeds. In contrast, when he discovers the hypocrisy of Tartuffe, he reverses himself and determines to hate and persecute all pious men. 2.
