Chem Lab 117-517 Ms. Moore September 22, 2009 EXPERIMENT #1: Conservation Laws SUMMARY: In experiment #1, we tried to find a solution to the question of whether or not mass and volume are conserved when two liquid substances are mixed. For this experiment, we used water and acetone. We did a series of tests to see how the mixing water with water would affect mass and volume of the resulting mixture. We also mixed water with acetone (and vice versa) to see if there might be a different reaction to the chemicals that would affect their conservation if they were combined. Despite accumulating all the necessary material for the experiment, there still was the threat of human error for the experiment when it came to measurement and distribution of the substances. Nevertheless, careful handling of equipment and distribution would allow us to get a fairly plausible to accurate reading of how these liquids follow conservation laws.
